About My Undergraduate Major

You may surprise that I was a student of Department of Optical Engineering in Zhejiang University, rather than Electrical and Computer Engineering or Computer Science. Here is a brief explanation.

First of all, studying in Department of Optical Engineer doesn't indicate that I only have optics-related courses and research experience. The Chinese name of my department, (literally “Optical and Electrical Information Engineering”), has been misleadingly translated into “Optical Engineering” due to historical reasons. Actually, my department is just like a division of Electrical and Computer Engineering with emphasis on optoelectronics. The basic required courses such as Electric Circuit Principles, Digital Electronic Technology and C Programming Language are the same as other electronics-related majors. In the third and final years, we have both electronics-related and optics-related specialized courses; they are equally important.

During my undergraduate study, I've found my true interest in computer systems, particularly in computer architecture and embedded systems, and decided to focus on these areas during my graduate study. However, I believe I made the right choice in my major, because I've gained an interdisciplinary background in both electrics and optics. I believe that optics is promising in computer systems. For example, optical signaling using photonic interconnections provides low latency and high bandwidth density, thereby pushing away the “bandwidth wall”. As I majored in optical engineering as an undergraduate, my unique experience in both optics and electrics is a distinctive advantage over other pure electrical background students, especially in optical interconnections related projects.
